We believe that the term ‘art tourism’ is a thing today. Visiting art spaces and galleries for recreational purposes have been conducted by many people especially the youngsters. This positive activity need to be maintained as art has always been an important aspect on every culture with its educational significance. Hence, we give you five recommended local art spaces and galleries that you go to see.
1. Rumah Seni Cemeti, Yogyakarta
The place performs as a platform to exhibit and communicate works of both local and foreign contemporary artists. It also, at the same time, functions as the center of information, documentation and promotion to a wide range of art works. If you happen to live in the city or planning to pay a visit, make sure to add Rumah Seni Cemeti into your to-go list and immerse yourself into the wide range of masterpieces being exhibited.
2. Ruang Rupa, Jakarta
Established back in 2000 as an organization for local contemporary artists, Ruang Rupa (RURU) has been growing steadily while sticking to their main objective which is to support the development of art within the urban lifestyle through exhibitions, festivals, art labs, up to publishing platforms and medias.
3. ART:1, Jakarta
The ultra-modern gallery/museum was established in 1983 and previously known as Mon Decor Gallery. The three-story-tall building stands on a 4000 sqm land and permanently hosts 2.500 fine miscellaneous artworks from several notable Indonesian and international artists. ART:1 is also the only gallery on this list that features a virtual reality tour around the compound on their website. For us, that’s pretty amazing.
4. Selasar Sunaryo, Bandung
Owned and operated by respected Indonesian artist, Sunaryo, Selasar Sunaryo Art Space houses most of Sunaryo’s artworks which include sculptures, paintings, and installations. Embracing the noble intention to instill educational values to the public, they have been hosting several art-related events; art exhibitions from other artists, theater performances, concerts, and literature discussions. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee after wandering around the space in their in-house coffee shop, Kopi Selasar.
5. Biasa Art Space, Bali
Even though possessing the name of ‘Biasa’ or directly translated as ‘usual’, there’s nothing usual about the art space. They have hosted many exhibitions by reputable international and local artists since 2005. Originally based in Bali, Biasa Group had expanded their networks to Jakarta and established their in-house fashion flagship. Their operation is not solely about showcasing art but as an effort to preserve art, they established a restoration studio in collaboration with renowned Italian art restorer.
