As summer holiday approaches, most of you might currently be planning Instagram worthy trips, be it jetting off by yourself, a romantic getaway with significant others or fun filled family vacay. Talking about travel companions, it seems like singles and lovebirds have more common thing in life despite their social dating status, especially when it comes to their preferred destinations to explore.

Agoda, one of the world’s leading accommodation sites, recently revealed the results of its most recent Travel Smart survey, which shows the destinations most favored by travelers in both solo and couples categories. The study looked at millions of bookings and over 30,000 reviews submitted on These customers are asked to rate their vacation destination after their stay on a scale of 1-10.

As seen from image above, Bruges – Belgium topped the global list of destinations with an 8.8, the highest overall rating*. This medieval town looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale and highly favored by couples and singles alike. Verona in Italy, legendary home of literature’s most famous star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet, came in a close second with an 8.7. Hoi An, Vietnam, another charming town seeped in history, came in third, represents the only Asian destination in the list.

Respectively, Vilnius in Lithuania; Crete (solo) & Santorini (couples) island of Greece; Marrakech in Morocco; Porto in Portugal; Budapest; Dubrovnik in Croatia and Krakow in Poland ranks fourth to tenth.

One thing most destinations on the list have in common is that they are smaller cities and have significant cultural attractions to draw in visitors. Many are also historic centers filled with architectural beauty. Another interesting fact is that nearly all of these destinations are included in UNESCO World Heritage list.

“Famous destinations, such as Paris and London, tend to draw in more visitors,” said John Brown, Agoda’s Chief Operating Officer, “but experienced travelers know that the types of destinations on this list can often offer an even deeper travel experience and more opportunities to connect to the culture. Take Vilnius for example, it’s one of Europe’s most charming cities, but it still feels like an undiscovered gem.”
