Under the Billabong LAB Divison, Billabong releases their second limited collection titled the Warhol Surf. LAB Division focuses on supporting artists, musicians, designers, photographers, and surf icons. Reaping their values and work spirits to be incorporated onto Billabong’s products. Just like Warhol’s iconic works that are integrated into this particular collection.
In creating the collection, Billabong works hand in hand with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Billabong used many Warhol’s selected artworks as inspirations. Artworks like polaroids, black and white photography, slides, silkscreen paintings, screen-prints, and even sound recordings that are fused with Billabong’s design language.
Back in 1968, Andy Warhol worked on his underground film project, San Diego Surf. A movie that is closely related to surfers and their cultures. This resulted to the collection being deeply connected to the surf community and still forwarding the artistic Warhol style. Billabong picked three of Warhol’s quintessential arts and implemented them into the products’ designs.
The first design features the emblematic and vivid Warhol’s Skull macabre painting that is used to accentuate the products. Next, the multimedia live performance experience Exploding Plastic Inevitable (EPI) mood is fused with Billabong’s iconic sunset fade. Other designs are the collection of surfers, tropical vintage motels, and beach scenes photographs and the black and white palm trees photo series.
These designs are applied on several variants of the products. There are graphic tees, muscle tee, crop tee, women’s bodysuit, two-piece swimwear, surf pant, cap, trucker, backpack, and towel. The collection is globally launched on August 4th 2017 and it is currently available on Billabong Indonesia’s stockists in Bali and Bandung.
