Fred Perry

This fall and winter 2013, the Fred Perry design team have rediscovered archive British knitting patterns. Inspired by traditional homespun knits of the 1950s the collection offers a modern interpretation of time honored British styles. This season sees key components of the British youth wardrobe, patterned knits and classic Fred Perry pieces cleverly combined to create a modern and relevant collection. Every sweater, hat, glove and scarf comes with a specially created knit pattern, offering the wearer the chance to knit their own.

A popular past time in post war Britain, home knitting from centuries old patterns offered an inexpensive and practical way to dress the family. Homespun sweaters were passed down through the generations and worked their way into the wardrobes of British youth throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Every tribe found a way of adopting the traditional styles – be it oversized and loose and teamed with a tennis bomber or slim and sharp worn over a button up Fred Perry shirt.

Key pieces from the men’s collection are the Knitted pocket shirt, a classic Fred Perry shirt updated with a cable knit pocket in contrasting colors. The knitted tank top, a nod to Fred Perry’s sporting heritage and the cable knits history with tennis and sport. The patterns origins lie in British fishing communities. Traditionally families combined unique stitch designs to create symbolic patterns that told the story of the people who wore them.

The collection also features the Lambswool Aran roll neck knit, originating from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Fred Perry have taken this classic and given it a burst of color with a deep red color way, also featured is the Tartan jacquard panel shirt, a reworking of the classic Fred Perry shirt, given an injection of color with a bold tartan front panel.

Another stand out piece of the collection is Fair Isle turtle neck, Fred Perry have taken this pattern, which originates from the remote island of Fair Isle to the north of Scotland and was an adopted favourite of skinheads, and reworked it to feature iconic Fred Perry details. Accessories include beanies and scarves in Fair Isle and Cable patterns, Fair Isle gloves, mittens and iconic Fred Perry footwear reworked to feature the traditional knit patterns.
