Murals and graffiti have become part of human life. In the past, those things are the tool for human to record their information. Those records become a critical information, part of human history and human life today. Nowadays, both murals and street graffiti can be found throughout every corner of the city. Their presence on the walls of public spaces make it accessible for the public. Along with this story, last week on Wednesday, January 14th we got invited by the Art Dept, part of The Goods Dept, to see the work of five local street artist, such as Darbotz, Eddie Hara, Saleh Hussein, Marishka Soekarna, and Tuts. These artworks are presented in “Wall 4 All”, a digitalized never-done-before event, part of a collaboration with Samsung Indonesia and their latest smartphone known as Samsung GALAXY Note 4.
Technology, particularly devices also drove artistic production methods, especially murals and graffiti in different directions. According to the Samsung team, nowadays the artists can design the first work through their smartphone and its device before being painted on the wall or any-kind of media related with public consumption. Along with other forms of technology, social media, this platform will helped the existence of murals and graffiti became more widely known to the public without any boundaries. Often time, the artists also uploaded their work in order for people to know their latest work in a more specific time and location.
Aside being ahead with the future and greatness of technology, “Wall 4 All” is presented with the concept of a live mural, art on the walls, where those five street artist create artworks through the medium of five piece of panel canvas. People could also see their artworks live and through the TV screen, during the opening night. The main hall of Pacific Place in Central Jakarta was chosen as the place for the exhibition. This makes “Wall 4 All” the first event that presents a mural in the midst of a mall, especially in Indonesia. In addition, the main message that the organizers want to say is well maintained because of the great selection of the performers as well as the artists consistency in presenting a work of art. To be sure, murals and graffiti are no longer a typical commission art. All of the artworks from “Wall 4 All” event can be enjoyed by people of Jakarta from 14th to January 19th 2015.
