As if Bali’s beautiful seascape and tropical weather were not alluring enough, the Northeast area part of the Island boasts one of the most amazing examples we have seen of sustainable design, a six-story structure created by architect Elora Hardy IBUKU and made almost entirely of bamboo. Known as Sharma Springs, as the building is called, gets extra awesome points for being completely handmade as it was built from a scaled-down bamboo model, not from the blueprints and drawings, and for housing a library and a spa. This hotel is set within a river valley landscape along the sacred Ayung River of Bali. This six-storey bamboo house is unique and the latest addition to Green Village which first established in 2010, a master-planned community of high end bamboo villas with its distinctive blonde roofs. Entering the house is a feast to the eyes and a showcase at how black and white bamboo can be combined in all shapes and pattern to create a stunning collection of luxurious floors, walls, ceiling, stairs and railings. Even the roof is an innovative arrangement of bamboo shingles. Sharma Springs was designed for the Sharma family as a jungle fantasy escape. It is a six-level, four-bedroom 750sqm home overlooking the Ayung river valley, built almost entirely of bamboo.

The entry to the Sharma Springs house is via a dramatic tunnel-bridge that brings you directly to the open-air living, lounge, kitchen spaces, dining area with fabulous views, and office or work area on the highest level. The staircases circle around the central tower to the levels below, a play room, as well as four double bedrooms and a library that are each enclosed for air-conditioning with full length spinning glass windows and doors. All the rooms are decorated with bamboo furniture, perfectly complementing the home. The sixth-floor lookout is a front-row seat to the amazing sunset views over the Ayung river valley and Green Village. Master metal smiths custom-built the shower stalls, stone carvers from Java carved boulders into counter slabs. The team of Sharma Springs also custom-designed each item of furniture in this house. IBUKU, Gardens follows permaculture design principles, designed the surrounding gardens. While the main entrance is an enormous bamboo tube accessing the fourth floor and the lowest level connect to a private garden and pool. Sharma Springs also has a dedicated guest house with its own fabulous views. The guest house sleeps two adults and two kids. The house includes a butler and ADSL WIFI.
