Indonesia has never been shy about the importance of good design as an integral part of a full life. From batik to wood carving, painting, to sculpture – good design, wherever it had its roots, has been integrated into people’s lifestyles, into their homes. The constant has been elegance, craftsmanship, and that timeless quality so hard to define and yet so valued. Never has this been more so than in the way Indonesians furnish their homes. Even in the austerity of the early days of the republic, international designers and influence were playing a part, as in the Scandinavian elements behind “Jengki Jawa” furniture.

Made in Indonesia, it was still clever reflection of the world’s best in time and space. This search for that something special was at the heart of the genesis of Belgian company Ethnicraft. Founders Philippe Delaisse and Benolt Laos, saw the craftsmanship of Tegal furniture makers as the key to adding the best in design and creating outstanding furniture to take Europe by storm. That was 15 years ago. Since then they have added Vietnamese and Serbian elements, enhancing their access to the best of sustainable raw materials, while broadening the design platform for some of the most creative minds in Asia and Europe.

The have generated an edgy elegance, appreciated by buyers who note the craftsmanship, timeless design and investment which is the promise of the unmistakable Ethnicraft brand. This prominent brand has been steadily growing the presence in Indonesia since the company opened its Jakarta showroom a couple years ago. Meanwhile, its designers are constantly in motion, innovating, and creating furniture with that special sensual impact that turns Indonesian homes into pieces of art. This is what is happening with the label’s latest collection.

Well known Belgian designers Jan and Lara have devised the company’s Universe Positivo furniture range. It is the element blending of craftsmanship and design using the warmth of oak and the boldness of steel, brought together under the skilled hands of artisans, to create family heirlooms that retain their interest and charm over generations. Ethnicraft recently launched its Universo Positive collection on November 26th 2014 at their flagship store in Radio Dalam, South Jakarta and the range will take its place alongside the company’s other outstanding elegant products in its Bumi Serpong Damai showroom at that time.

To that end prominent Indonesian designers, Santi Aleysius and Humphrey Tedja from Domisilium Studios as well as architect Joe Willendra from W Office, were set the scene for the launch. Sharing their intimate knowledge of Indonesian taste and trends and how the glamour European products have been able to find a perfect fit with this experimental tradition. Inevitably Universe Positivo will become part of that process, backed by the internationally renowned Ethnicraft brand.
